3 Questions You Should Be Asking Yourself About Your Heater

Posted on

Nearly every home has a heating system. This is by far the best and easiest way to heat your home, but that doesn't mean that it is always easy to keep up. If you are not careful you could easily miss important signs that your heater is giving out then you would need a full replacement of the system rather than simple repairs. Here are some things to look for in your heating system to ensure that it is running properly.

Is There Water Around The Heater?

It is important that you keep an eye on the heater to make sure that it isn't wet. It is normal to have a little steam coming from the heater, but there should never be actual puddles of water around the heater. This is a sign that there is a potentially serious problem, and could become a safety issue. This is why you should call for repairs right away if you notice there is water coming from the system.

Is The Pilot Light Discolored?

The pilot light will be one of the most important things when checking on your heater. The color of the pilot light will let you know if all of the gas is balanced. The pilot light should always have a healthy blue color. If you notice that it is yellow, orange, or red, then the gas levels are off.

If you don't get this problem corrected right away you could be dealing with gas leaks that are dangerous. Carbon monoxide poisoning is undetectable by the human senses, but it can be lethal. Which is why you should always have a detector in the house, and you should be checking on the pilot light often.

Is The House Heating At Different Rates?

Another thing to notice is how the house is heating. If you notice that the home is heating at different rates it could be a sign that your heater needs repairs. Each room should be about the same temperature. You would expect to see a discrepancy between the main floor and the basement, seeing that heat travels to the higher elevation. From one room to the next on the same floor, however, it should be the same temperature. If this isn't the case it could be a problem with the ducts, or it could be a problem with the heater.

By asking yourself these questions frequently you can catch problems early on and save money on heating repairs. If you need more information on heating repairs, check out companies like Chappel's Heating & Cooling.
